Bandit

Bandit is a Sun Conure. He was adopted into the flock on 04/03/2021 and hatched early January 2021, he was about 8 weeks old when adopted. Bandit is a very confident bird with an attitude to match the Macaw’s (he thinks he is the boss, just ask him LOL). He was trained with recall from very early on and is quick to learn and wants to please. About a month after Bandit joined the flock we got Daisy-Duke who is a Jenday Conure (who will feature in another post), Bandit was instantly smitten by her and as a juvenile with the green still on his wings they looked similar, and they were nicknamed “The Twins”. This nickname has since stuck even though they now look completely different

Bandit loves to snuggle and is very affectionate towards his humans, most of the time he is happy to sit on people’s shoulders for photos or fly to them for treats when doing our shows in the mobile aviary.

As with all the birds in the flock, he is empowered to make decisions and decide what he feels comfortable with when interacting with the public. Bandit loves to Zoom Zoom around and is very quick & agile in his flight. At times this behaviour can be a bit of a hindrance if he decides that he doesn’t want to stop zooming come pack up time with the mobile aviary.

Although Conures can mimic speech, they are not known for talking but are very good at mimicking sounds. Bandit does say hello but it is not as clear as the Cockatoo’s or Macaws speech.

Bandit is trained for free-flight and has just started to “flock” with Apollo when they fly together which is amazing to watch. Training for free-flight with bandit has been a bit scary as he is so small and unlike Apollo we don’t have a GPS tracker for him so we are reliant on his ability, the bond we have with him and his willingness to be part of the family. Bandit has already had a run in with a Falcon but thankfully due to his training & instincts he was able to come through triumphantly.

Some of Bandits tricks are – step up, play basketball, recall and station. He is also learning the money trick and ring toss amongst other things. And of course he Free-Flys
